This mention from unravelling was one I was not even aware of when the show was on , but on the 1st anniversary of it's run I thought I'd post it anyway. Here's another mention of the show from 'The Miner' to help commemorate the anniversary: http://theminer.net.au/creswicks-shakespeares-midsummers-dream-the-musical/ From the U.S. comes a resource in learning about the Arts. The you tube clips are detailed interviews with top practitioners in full length interviews. These are in a series called Bone2Pick. Thanks To Niklas and Travis for recording this, and the show's Overture, (available on this site's homepage) as part of their coursework at Oxygen College.
I was invited to play trumpet for the people attending the 2015 Ballarat Archibald exhibition by the Ballarat Gallery organisers. Their photographer, Ben Cox ([email protected]) has kindly shared his pictures of me, and I would like to share them with you. Thanks Ben! This review of 'I Won't Dance" has now been published by Theatre People:
http://www.theatrepeople.com.au/i-wont-dance-review/ Review of Ned:The Musical.
Theatre people asked me to write a review of the world premiere of Ned The Musical, which is currently playing at the Ulumbarra Theatre, Bendigo. If you would like to read it, here is a link to it: Ned The Musical review. Well Dreamers, I am writing this post on returning from the Sunday bump out following the show's 4 night run. It was fantastic to see the team hard at work taking scenery apart and lugging everything out to storage. I wasn't much help, as my legs are feeling the strain of dancing these last 4 nights, and I know now why I really didn't want to do any acting in this show, but just be seated and play guitar and trumpet.
I would like to publicly acknowledge the contribution to the show's future by everyone involved in this first, workshop production. Thankyou for your patience and perseverance, and for the kind and generous gifts! You can all be rightly proud in helping to prove that original musical theatre can be created and performed in this country, and that musicals are an international genre, and not exclusively American or British. CTC had the courage to stage this new work, when no other company would even consider it. And its worthwhile to note too that every show was sold out! Lessons learned were too many to number, but the stand -out one is this: the value of commitment. It wasn't very long ago that a community theatre could cast a show, and be fairly confident that those cast would actually stay with the show to the end. Since the introduction of social media, it seems obvious to me that that is no longer the case. Now I wouldn't expect all auditionees to actually show up as they said they would, but once somebody has been cast, and used rehearsal time being trained in song and dance and script for weeks and then just leave the production? Well that is a phenomenon that must not, ( and in the interests of community theatre's survival), cannot be allowed to become the norm. In future I would definitely do more investigation into an auditionee's online activities and research their biography for hints of unreliability and deception. As Tarantino wrote: There is a huge difference between being a character and having character. Give me a cast with perseverance and a sense of commitment to see tasks through, over anything else! Here I leave you with this last full cast picture, taken just minutes before opening night. I commend them for their character: Just 10 sleeps to go till opening night, and stills loads to get done, of course. Musical theatre is very demanding, but especially so when one is doing a world premiere performance, and not a re-staging of the work done long before by a Broadway or West End professional production team. Coutesy Chris' camera, with shots by Jacinta: here is this week's rehearsals in pictures: While we enjoy the freedom to express our ideas about the world as I have done with Midsummer's Dream The Musical, this is not the case for our brothers and sisters in many other places in the world, so I wish to offer my support for my fellow thespians in Russia by posting this link,Teatr Doc that I think demonstrates a model of courage for us all :Gary
Hello again Dreamers. Well we open in a week's time and tickets have been sold. Here's some updates:
I have provided a template to Meg (SM), and Jacinta (PM), that has been expanded to include all the necessary stage set-ups. Many difficulties here had to be overcome, (or at least managed), especially in light of the design of the courthouse theatre. (Which was never designed to be used for any purpose other than dispensing justice...Mmm maybe not much has changed?. Yes, the public will soon get to judge each person's involvement in the prosecution of the show, and the commitment of each participant in it. Will we each be judged kindly? Harshly? or perhaps Justly? I would settle for the latter. Niklas (acting MD), has briefed Steve (Lights), to operate the special sound effects in the show. These include a fanfare (Written and played by me and recorded on my tablet), Gongs and a Glockenspiel. (Each are linked.) Steve will now organise these into their playing order, and control them from the balcony.(See previously posted pictures). Steve has also been busy (as has Jacinta), in producing the show's program. When I can, I will post up a copy for the archives. There will also be a video made of the show by Steve for the CTC archives, and he assures me that this will remain offline. So you had better buy your tickets now! Our next to last rehearsal will be on Sunday at 5:30p.m. Arrive early if you can. Consider this as a full dress rehearsal. Finally, if you are a show queen, you might enjoy the Tony's I've just posted elsewhere on this site,(Here's the link:Tony's) that give a glimpse of an era as vanished as it is missed. Thanks, See you all there, Gary
Hello again Dreamers. I thought I might share some of the processes behind constructing the 2nd. helmet for the show's Athenian guards, and a handy , affordable solution to making ancient greek sandles for a XXL foot. (Mine!) Captions appear over the picture when mouse hovers over image. Once I had a cheap toy helmet ($3 from BLOC), I tore all the cresting and other cheap bits off it, till it was just a round head bowl shape. I extended the back and ear parts with plumber's silver metal foil tape. (Plumber's supplies). The front was cut from metal flashing used by plumber's too. The crest frame was also cut from this, after making a paper template. This frame was made 2 sided, so as to provide a 'V' shape, into which the crest will be inserted. The crest was a $3 black feather boa from a variety store. This was then helped to stay in the frame with bronzed tape . The helmet turned out very well I think, and unlike rubber or paper mache, it shines under the lights, because it really is metallic paint over metal. Footware was always a concern, as shops rarely stock sandles that fit me. I am a 13+, and wider than most foot size. I tried the previous blog's method of adapting flip flops, but couldn't tolerate the toe piece, as I have never worn those type of shoes before. So i came up with the following, more comfortable method. Op shop belts, ($4 each) provided the leather. Flip flops ( with leather 'V" piece over rubber tread sole. $10) that did fit. You can then attach any comfy, stretchy material to wind around your legs, and I've found mine to be very durable and comfortable on stage. They look genuinly hand crafted, because they are! Oh yes, I dance (well I call it dancing), and they stay on the foot perfectly.
Many times the first thing people ask when meeting musicians is "What are your influences?" This is an understandable impulse to attempt to understand the unknown thing by referring it to something you might be more familiar with. However, this is not possible if both parties don't share a cultural heritage. Growing up in the Sixties and Seventies of last century was quite a different time to the experiences available to many in my cast, for example. So... with the aim of providing anyone interested in MY influences, I am providing some of the cultural artifacts that I grew up on, and have become obvious to me as influencing myself, and my music. Hope you enjoy taking some time away from today in order to understand today better:
Kiss Me Kate, music and lyrics Cole Porter is one of my favorite musicals, by a master. Here's a link about the show:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiss_Me,_Kate Let me know what you think.
Movies about Vaudeville. Though too young to ever experience the golden age of vaudeville, the Hollywood movies like There's No Business Like Show Business, and The Seven Little Foys were a window to an era I missed out on, but learned to appreciate. I picked this one, not because its the best, but because it starsBob Hope, who was a huge influence on me by co-starring with Bing Crosby in theRoad Movie series. Gypsy is probably the best musical ever written, but not available in full at the moment, so here's one of my favorite moments:
In my opinion, the best score by Lerner andLoewe. Richard Harris is miscast, but Vanessa Redgrave is so good I don't mind.
Alice Cooper beside Barbra Streisand. Who'd have thunk it? Alice's 1973Billion Dollar Babies was the soundtrack of my youth. While Babs is still my favorite singer to listen to.
Hello again Dreamers. The starting date for the show has been set back a week, so opening night will now be Wednesday April 29th. During rehearsals we are now finally realising how fast many of the show's costume changes have to be, which has made it necessary in the case of the scene before Three Weddings to write and workshop another scene. but that's not uncommon in developing a new musical. I have read many anecdotes about writers and composers having to cook up solutions to such problems on the spot, and they were facing much larger financial risks if it didn't work. Last night really brought home to me how the pieces of this giant jigsaw all come together to achieve the final outcome, which I'm convinced will be an exciting addition to the genre. All credit should go to the cast who have stuck it out during some very trying times, but we are over the worst now, and the show has gathered around it an aura of 'can-be -done'. It may be instructive to reflect on the blogs that have been posted, and see the show's development over time. I would recommend it. I would suggest too that everybody mind their health, as without being well enough to perform, you are not going to have a very pleasant time on stage. Stay out of drafts, and keep the kitchen temperature down to a healthy level at the theatre, because the A.C. is very hard on the voice. Hello Dreamers. With only three weeks to go, I thought maybe I'd post another update about this week's production process, and keep everybody up to date with how the show is going. Dont forget the 2 day weekend workshop coming up on Sat.11th/4, and Sun 12th/4 to make all those tweeks to the show too!. Items you should attend to in the meanwhile include the following: 1. Getting off book 2. Attending to your costume and footware. 3. Making sure you have all the props you need. 4. Doing your upmost to help promote the show, its site, and ticket sales. So Lets have a look at some advice I've found that might help for each of those points. I've made a page for each, just push the button you need to work on: Getting Off Book. Warning! Some clips have explicit language, so if you're easily offended... what are you doing training to be an actor!
Costumes: Bloc is open Mondays and Thursdays 2-8pm. (Note, Dont be late to any scheduled rehearsals to go there!) Use the costumes page on this site for inspiration. Ask somebody, but dont hope for the best and do nothing! Footware: The following clip might inspire you: Start using the props that have already been provided, but please put them back properly and respect them! Most have involved more work than you realise, so dont just put them where its convenient for you, but where they will be safe! If you are waiting for somebody else to promote the show, you are living in a fool's paradise! The poster is (and has always been), downloadable from this site's homepage.
Tickets are available by calling 5345 8280. Let it be known. If, after doing all this, you have any time, check out the great clips I've just put on the cast resources pages, and tell me if they help. See you all Tuesday, and come on time to walk on stage at 7;30. Not at 7:30. Thanks, Gary. Hello Dreamers, and thankyou for putting in the extra time needed to run through the entire show last night. Apologies from Chris, as he was not well enough to attend. I was very happy to note that the show's running time is close to the 100 minutes I guess-timated even before rehearsals began. Good to hear that some friends are going to begin attending rehearsals to be trained as stage hands. The cast simply won't have the time during performance to move furniture, so reliable assistance is a must. We of course all hope to have Mary singing again once she has recovered fully. Ellen is filling the boots of Puck very confidently, and she has already proven to be a quick study. The coming week, it was decided ("in this new spirit of democracy"), that the rehearsals shall be on Tuesday and Wednesday,(rather than Thursday). This seems to suit some cast better, but let me know how it works out please before we alter permanently. This still needs O.K from band. Saturday April 11th. and Sunday 12th. April have been proposed as workshop days for cast to polish their work. Between 10a.m. and 4 P.M. I will be there to help the musicians and cast. I recommend too that everyone be off-book and have footwear and costumes, props etc. ready by then. Still required in props are the following:(Please let me know, so I can cross off list). 1. Placards on sticks with protest slogans painted on them. Ex: ‘Go Greener , Not Meaner!”, “Gnomes need homes !”, “ Earth is not a Dirty Word!”, ‘Water works Wonders 2.Mustardseed is seen to finish eating a giant mushroom, (which is a muffin decorated with bright colours to resemble a mushroom.) Icing kit? Coloured icing mix? 3.A bottle of perfume with an atomiser attached. The Label on it reads 'Forest Fairy Dew', used by Cobweb. 4.A Bottle of liqueur in fancy design , labelled ' Apricot Nectar'. 5. A child's bedlight, resembling a natural object, that remains lit throughout rest of scene, to go off on Oberon's cue 6.Large arrays of fairy lights? The bedlight above might be one of those provided to young children that have fairy or such- like decoration. To this list, if anyone knows where I can get 1 piece molded plastic stools in hour-glass shape from, please let me know. I will screw the chair tops I’ve got into them, so they wont be returnable. The idea is they’re light and strong. Can I ask everyone to take pics during rehearsals, as they add enormously to the site. How about some people in costumes? , People using props? etc. Thanks, Gary
Hello Dreamers, Sarah will no longer be involved with this production, and Ellen Scott will be playing Puck. Welcome Ellen !
Mary assures us that she is on the mend from her illness, and we hope for her speedy recovery. Meanwhile Mick has been busy putting together the set, that will be finished over the next two weeks. Please help clear the stage and help tidy up when you arrive early for rehearsals. You should do your utmost to be available to walk on stage at 7:30. Please be careful lifting , and ask for assistance if lifting items around stage. Also be careful of your feet, as they're the only thing that can hold you up during performance! The costumes are coming along very well, and I suggest you annotate your script carefully to work out your many changes you will be doing during the performances. Once we are really running through the show smoothly, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone inhabit their costume with their character's posture, walk, and gestures. Footwear is always problematic in period pieces like this show, so please consider sandles now, before it is too late. I have had a lot of fun this past week constructing props for the show, and I hope you all enjoy using them. Please take special care of them, as many involved a great deal of effort to make. The small items are best stowed in the boxes provided, and the larger one's should be carefully organised on the tables in the back room. Promoting a show is never easy, but all cast should by now have downloaded posters from this site, and put them up wherever you think they will catch the public's eye. You should all have one on your back window! New script edition out today, check you e-mail please. Thanks, Gary Hi all, we're at the half-way point of the rehearsals now, and its all hands to the deck. After working out the main blocking for the actors in the scenes, its time for me to hang up my directors hat for a while and let Meg work the scenes without music for a while. Mary will be returning to rehearsals after her work related abscences and tonsillitis, so we can run scenes fully cast again. I'm playing Theseus, (that lovable tyrant), Bottom, Demetrius and Pixie II, since Jack's withdrawl from the production. This has necessitated a few adjustments to the script, together with the already blocked entrances, etc. that I will be attaching to an email soon as the script's Purple Edition. Please Update your blue script completely , from this online edition, as soon as you receive it! I am terrible learning lines, so my sympathies go out to all the cast who suffer as I do from verbal dyslexia. Hope you can talk your friends and relations into practicing lines with you, and come well prepared and on time to all the rehearsals from now till the run. If you are going to be absent or late, please e-mail me, and not just tell me as you're running out the door. My days are frequently blended from rehearsals, and my memory is poor, so please e-mail me. Texting is too new school for me to run my life from, I much prefer e-mail. Until I can re-record the worst of my mp3's I've closed the fots page too. Sorry 'bout that! To avoid any confusion for 1st timer's to the stage, I have included a stage direction diagram below: Here is a link to the wiki about this 1999 version of Shakespeare's Play, A Midsummer Night's Dream that you might enjoy: AMSND The Play
As nobody seems to have submitted any comments on the 1935 B&W version I posted a while ago, I'm hoping my readers enjoy this colour version, and please let me know what you think about it: Tickets for the show are through the usual ticketmaster Paul Ford , of CTC. Ph. 53458280.
Hello Dreamers, When you are looking over the site, you may notice a couple of changes that I've made. By learning a little about the flash swf file editing software called Vectorian Giotto, (Here's the Link: Vectorian Giotto), I've been able to create some interesting effects on this site, including an animation of my avatar, (the invisible man), the rotation of the urgent badge on the home page and a couple of surprises in development. A steep learning curve, but so much fun when you see the results on the page , just as you had predicted them. Another new feature I've added to the site is on the home page. Their is now a map and picture of where Creswick Courthouse theatre is, and what it looks like . (Thanks to Google maps and images, and Weebly!) While looking up the terms Creswick courthouse theatre Creswick, I was delighted to see many of the show's posters and even a picture of our very own Titania included in the images search.
