The reason why Shakespeare set the play A Midsummer Night's Dream in Ancient Athens was not obvious to me, and I co-incidentally saw these documentaries about Democracy and Theatre developing together. Though the English had a long tradition in fairy folk, the play takes place in the Athenian fairy kingdom. I believe Shakespeare intended the setting to be highlighted, and so kept it and made many references to Greek culture in the songs too. The Duke then takes on a relevance that highlights this drama/democracy theme. Gary
