Midsummer's Dream the Musical has two set piece dances in the script, a Tango fantastique, and a soft-shoe sand dance. Below are some clips that might be inspirational for a choreographer/assistant director in designing these episodes.

1. The Tango included here is a dance piece about a lost romance. Performed by Isabelle Rune and Santiago Hernández to the song "Otra Luna" from the album "Narcotango" by Carlos Libedinsky. Directed by Jonas Rejman.
2. Pablo Veron & Geraldine Rojas - Una Emocion (HD with no movie credits from the film, Assasination Tango)
3.Gene Kelly & Donald O'Connor do a "sit-down" dance medley on a Gene Kelly TV special from 1959.
4.Great musical number involving Fred Astaire and a bunch of sand.

This film explores the history of movement direction and how movement in theatre has evolved in recent years.
Movement Director Ayse Tashkiran looks back at the Central European influences of the 20th century to the contemporary work of physical theatre companies including Complicite and DV8. As an example of the various roles movement might play in a show, this video is inspirational:Gary |

Vanessa Ewan leads this movement direction masterclass, guiding an actor playing Nora from A Doll's House using techniques to explore physicality and enhance character transformation.
The wonderful illustration of workshop techniques applied to character transformation is really worth seeing. Again, inspirational: Gary PLEASE NOTE: Not all movement exercises are suitable for everyone and this or any other movement exercise may result in injury. To reduce the risk of injury, never force or strain, use the exercises only as intended and demonstrated, and follow all instructions carefully. |
Each commedia character has a specific physical shape and way of moving. This film was made over a two day workshop with a group of young actors and lead by Didi Hopkins. The film was made by Deborah May.
This is the first time I've really understood the purpose of studying Commedia dell'Arte. I really like the contemporary examples the teacher gives as exemplars of the Commedia character types. This ties in really well with the use of portraits shown in the video 'movement direction: creating character' above: Gary |
